1. Evangelization: The Invitation
Evangelization is the initial proclamation of the Gospel (Kerygma) intended to arouse faith. It is the process of sharing the “Good News” of Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection.
As you noted, it begins with a personal encounter. It isn’t just about transmitting information or doctrine; it is about introducing one person to another—the human person to the Divine Person.
- The Goal: To lead someone to a point of conversion where they consciously decide to follow Jesus.
- The Nature: Outward-facing, seeking, and inviting.
2. Discipleship: The Journey
Discipleship is the ongoing, lifelong process of growth that follows that initial encounter. If evangelization is “making” a disciple, discipleship is “being” a disciple. It involves the intentional decision to live according to the teachings of Jesus and to imitate His character.
The Nature: Inward-deepening, disciplined, and communal.
The Goal: Maturity in faith, transformation of the heart, and equipping the believer to eventually evangelize others.
The Intrinsic Connection
The relationship between the two is cyclical rather than linear. You cannot have true discipleship without an initial evangelization, and evangelization that doesn’t lead to discipleship is incomplete.
