Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Communion

What We Do

EMHCs assist the ordinary ministers of Holy Communion—bishops, priests, and deacons—in the reverent distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ when pastoral need requires their service. Their ministry is rooted in the Church’s faith in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist, the “source and summit of the Christian life” (Lumen Gentium, 11).

By serving at the altar with reverence, humility, and devotion, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion help ensure that the faithful may worthily receive the Eucharist, especially during Mass and when bringing Holy Communion to the sick and homebound. Through their ministry, they give witness to the sacredness of the Eucharist and Christ’s abiding presence among His people.
