Altar Servers have the privilege of assisting the priest and deacon during the celebration of the Holy Mass and other liturgical celebrations. Through their faithful service at the altar, they help foster an atmosphere of reverence, prayer, and active participation in the Church’s sacred worship. As the Second Vatican Council teaches, the liturgy is “the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the font from which all her power flows” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 10).

Serving as an Altar Server is far more than performing ceremonial duties. It is a unique opportunity to grow in faith, deepen one’s love for Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist, and develop a greater understanding of the sacred liturgy. By serving with reverence, dedication, and joy, Altar Servers become active participants in the Church’s worship and faithful witnesses to Christ for the entire parish community.

Roles and Responsibilities

Remain attentive throughout the liturgy and carry out all responsibilities with prayerfulness, reverence, and a spirit of humble service.

Foster a prayerful, reverent, and respectful atmosphere throughout all liturgical celebrations.

Lead the entrance and recessional processions by carrying the processional Cross and candles.

Assist the priest and deacon at the altar with attentiveness, reverence, and dignity.

Hold the Roman Missal for the priest during the celebration of the Holy Mass.

Prepare the altar for the Liturgy of the Eucharist and assist in the presentation of the gifts.

Present the bread, wine, and water to the priest during the Preparation of the Gifts.

Assist with the lavabo by presenting the water and towel for the priest to wash his hands.

Ring the sanctuary bells at the appropriate times during the Eucharistic Prayer, according to parish custom.

Assist with other liturgical duties as directed by the priest or deacon.
