Holy Orders
Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time. It includes three degrees: the episcopate (bishops), the presbyterate (priests), and the diaconate (deacons), through which the faithful receive the grace to serve God’s people.
The Laying on of Hands
This is the essential rite of the sacrament, performed by the bishop, signifying the conferral of the Holy Spirit and the authority given to the ordained to serve the Church.
The Anointing with Sacred Chrism
Specifically for priests and bishops, the hands are anointed with oil, symbolizing the special configuration to Christ, the High Priest, and the sanctification of their ministry.
The Presentation of the Chalice and Paten
During the ordination of a priest, these vessels are presented to symbolize his role in presiding over the Eucharistic sacrifice.
The Book of the Gospels
Presented to the deacon and bishop, this symbol emphasizes their mission to preach the Word of God and faithfully proclaim the Gospel.
The Vestments (Stole and Chasuble/Dalmatic)
These liturgical garments are signs of the office being undertaken, representing the yoke of Christ and the official role of service the individual now performs within the liturgical life of the community.
