Anointing of the Sick
By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests, the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. This sacrament confers a special grace that unites the sick person more intimately to the Passion of Christ for their own good and that of all the Church.
Oil of the Sick:
This is the primary symbol, consisting of olive oil or another plant oil that has been blessed by the bishop. It signifies the healing, strengthening, and soothing presence of the Holy Spirit for the person who is ill.
The Laying on of Hands
This gesture, performed by the priest in silence, symbolizes the prayer for the descent of the Holy Spirit, invoking God’s healing power and comfort for the individual’s body and soul.
